Some of the tasks that they will be expected to carry out include maintaining discipline, instilling leadership traits, completing weekly written evaluations, delegating assignments, and overseeing class projects. They are responsible for the day to day activities and provide purpose, direction and motivation to the recruits. Company Officers will primarily assist state instructors with hands on training and teaching classes. This program is intended to develop leadership and management skills. Company Officers play a very important role in the success of each Recruit Academy and serve as first line leaders. The Company Officer Development Program is held in conjunction with both the Weekday and Weekend Recruit Academies. This course meets all requirements for Firefighter 1 along with Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations levels based on NFPA Standard 1001, “Firefighter Professional Qualifications.” Attendees will receive basic training in fire control, search and rescue, ladders, loss control, self-contained breathing apparatus, fire ground safety, tools, equipment and hazardous materials awareness and operations. It is intended for those volunteer firefighters who wish to be trained to the NFPA Firefighter 1 and Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations level and are unable to attend the 12-week program. The Basic Firefighter 1 program provides comprehensive training in all aspects of basic firefighting skills. This course meets all requirements for Firefighter 1 and 2 along with Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations levels based on National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 1001, “Firefighter Professional Qualifications.” Knowledge obtained from classroom instruction is transferred to fire-ground application during many hours of live fire training. It is designed to prepare and train recruits to meet those skills established by fire departments as entry-level. The weekday firefighting academy will provide comprehensive training in all aspects of basic firefighting skills.
